Why Reading Articles Helps with Comprehension Cloze

The passages that appear in PSLE Editing and Comprehension Cloze are rarely taken from stories or works of fiction. Instead, they are usually written in the style of newspaper or magazine articles.

This presents a real challenge for children preparing for the PSLE English examination. Up to this point, many students mainly read fictional stories. Even the STELLAR readers used in school often feature passages written as narratives.

As a result, when students have to think of suitable words to complete a Comprehension Cloze passage, they may be unfamiliar with the style of language used. The appropriate words and phrases simply do not come readily to mind.

Consider expressions such as:

• “restrictions would be placed on mining projects”
• “skating offers an extensive range of health benefits”
• “making a big impact on the environment”

This kind of language is common in informational articles but is not often found in fictional stories.

To help students become more familiar with it, I have compiled 30 articles taken from preliminary examination papers from different schools and years. These are not AI-generated articles. Each one was manually scanned and transcribed from a prelim paper.

Primary 5 and Primary 6 students can print out the collection and read the articles repeatedly in the run-up to the PSLE. Over time, this can help them develop a better “feel” for the language used in informational passages and identify suitable words in Comprehension Cloze more accurately.
